A short murder mystery story

It’s always been a dream of Connie Butterworth’s to be a private investigator. Now that she’s retired, she makes that dream a reality and sets herself up as an investigator.
With reluctant help from her sister-in-law, Sable, Connie takes on her first client.
What starts out as a simple case of tracking down a missing person soon turns into an intriguing case of deception, phone hacking and murder.

I listened to the audiobook. Totally enjoyed it.

It’s a novella or a short-story about two smart, bored, retired, and widowed sisters-in-law. One has a desire to start her own private detective business and this mystery is what happens on the first case.

The story features a lot of dialog, which I really liked. The dialog seemed very natural and I could easily imagine two people conversing and thinking the same things as these ladies. This made the story more real for me.

The audiobook is only 1 hr and 48 min long. The narration is very good. I almost didn’t purchase it because of the England accent; I’ve had trouble deciphering accents on some audiobooks and am wary now. But, I’m happy to say, the accent was on the softer side and I was able to enjoyably keep up with the story without having to rewind.

If you’re familiar with the Brit mystery series “Rosemary & Thyme”, this story strongly reminded me of that. Very genial, very smart ladies.

Playing At Murder A Butterworth Mystery Book 1 edition by Gillian Larkin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is a lighthearted murder mystery that is a fast & easy read. I'm unsure where it 's order is in the series, however it does not provide enough background info to be the 1st one. It is a complete story & is meant to stand alone. It just feels like you were dropped into it a while after it started.
The heroines of this mystery are looking for a new purpose for their senior years. They're personalities are different but complimentary.
I enjoyed the interaction between the characters. Was fun to read of older women who enjoyed adventure and mystery. It is always appreciated to find a story without foul language and explicit sex and proves that clean is entertaining and often contains laughter and chuckles. I would recommend this book for a short and entertaining read.
Great start for a new series. Love the main characters -- Connie and Sable. They bring different talents to the new business venture. There are of course suspects, but just when you think you've solved the case -- watch out. Love the twists. Off to a roaring start.
If you like to read lighthearted mysteries with down to earth investigators, this is your read. Imagine my surprise when reading the first chapter and the main character has my name! I actually paged back to re-read the beginning. I'm a Butterworth by birth and I thought this book was great! And not just because I'm one of the characters (in my own mind... LOL). The was the newly retired Connie Butterworth decides to do something she has always wanted to do and opens a detective agency. Her first case should be easy but soon turns into more than she bargained for. This is a well written book and I'm looking forward to reading more by Gillian.
Connie & Sable.. just like two bookends; opposite of each other but dependent on each other. Just finished this first book in a new series by Gillian Larkin and it's a great beginning! It was a fast read and captured my interest right from the beginning. It was late at night when I finished this book and instantly started the 2nd book.
Connie & Sable, both widows, have decided to become private investigators since they are both retired... or at least Connie has and she has to convince Sable! That begins their adventure and I personally plan on following it!
